Tire Inflation Pressure

~2min read

Maintaining tire air pressure at the recommended values provides the best combination of vehicle handling, tire service life, and ride comfort.

• Low tire air pressure causes rapid and uneven tread wear, degrades vehicle handling, increases fuel consumption, and also makes tire failure due to overheating more likely.

• Tires with air pressure above specification reduce ride comfort and are more susceptible to damage from impacts with road projections, potholes, and similar hazards.

In addition, high tire air pressure causes uneven tread wear.

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System warns of a probable drop in tire air pressure. The system monitors wheel rotational speed, which may change when tire air pressure decreases. For more information about the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, refer to page 404.

Although your vehicle is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, we recommend that you visually check the condition of the tires every day. If you think the tire pressure has decreased, check the tire pressure immediately with a tire pressure gauge.

Then perform the Tire Pressure Monitoring System initialization procedure.

Check the tire pressure of all wheels with a tire pressure gauge at least once a month. Even on fully serviceable tires, the air pressure may drop by 10-20 kPa (0.1-0.2 kgf/cm2) in a month. Be sure to check the air pressure in the spare tire at the same time as you check the pressure in the other tires.

Check the tire pressure when the tires are cold. Tires are considered cold if at least three hours have passed since the vehicle was stopped, or if, after the vehicle has been parked for a long time, you have driven no more than 1.6 km. If necessary, add air to the tire or release some air to bring the pressure to the recommended value shown on the tire and loading information label located on the driver's door opening.

After driving a distance of several kilometers, the tires warm up and the tire pressure increases by 30-40 kPa (0.3-0.4 kgf/cm2) compared with the cold condition. This is normal. Do not reduce the tire pressure in warm tires to the value recommended for cold tires. Otherwise, the tire pressure will be lower than specified.

You should have your own tire pressure gauge, which you should use consistently when checking tire pressure. This will make it easier to determine whether a drop in tire pressure is caused by tire damage or is simply a difference in readings between different gauges.

Tubeless tires have some ability to restore their airtightness after small punctures.

Therefore, if the pressure drops, carefully inspect the tires for punctures.

For your convenience, a label showing the tire sizes and the recommended cold tire pressure is attached to the driver's door opening pillar.
