THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)

The throttle position sensor is a sliding contact potentiometer that moves in accordance with the rotation of the throttle valve shaft, indicating the throttle valve opening angle. When the throttle valve shaft rotates, the throttle position sensor signal voltage changes. Based on the change in sensor signal voltage and the rate of its change, the engine control module determines the degree and speed of throttle valve opening.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

1. The throttle position sensor signal is more important for the automatic transmission control system than for the engine control system.

If the throttle position sensor is faulty, a "harsh" (jerking) gear shift occurs and other malfunctions may occur.

2. If the engine operates abnormally at idle or poor engine acceleration is noted, check the throttle position sensor connector. (If the throttle position sensor connector is connected incorrectly or there is a poor connection in the connector, the HI-SCAN (Pro) scan tool may show that the idle mode is constantly off, even when the accelerator pedal is released. This may cause rough engine idle or poor acceleration.) 3. Sensor signal voltage is below 0.1 V or above 4.7 V when the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position.

INSPECTION USING A VOLTMETER OR HI-SCAN (PRO) SCAN TOOL

SENSOR INSPECTION

1. Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector.

2. Measure the resistance between sensor terminal 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 3 (sensor power supply).

Specified value: 0.7 - 3.0 kΩ. 3. Connect an analog-type ohmmeter between sensor terminal 2 (sensor ground) and terminal 3 (sensor power supply).

4. Slowly open the throttle valve from fully closed (idle) to fully open position. Check that the resistance changes smoothly and in proportion to the throttle valve opening angle.

5. If the resistance either differs from the specified value or does not change smoothly, replace the throttle position sensor.

Torque Specification - Throttle Position Sensor: 1.5 - 2.5 N·m
