Knock Sensor (KS)

KNOCK SENSOR (KS)
The knock sensor is installed on the cylinder block wall to detect knock combustion in the engine cylinders. Vibration of the cylinder block caused by knock creates pressure acting on the piezoelectric quartz crystal in the sensor. As a result, the vibration is converted into a signal (voltage) proportional to its intensity, which is sent to the engine control module (ECM). If knock occurs, the ECM retards the ignition timing until the knock stops.

SENSOR INSPECTION
1. Disconnect the knock sensor connector and measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the connector.
Specified value: Approx. 5 MΩ <at 20 °C> 2. If the resistance is constant (circuit closed), replace the knock sensor.
Knock sensor tightening torque: 16 - 25 N·m 3. Measure the electrical capacitance of the sensor between terminals 1 and 2 of the connector.
Specified value: 800 - 1600 pF
