When the ignition is on (ignition key in "ON" position), battery power is supplied to the ECM, injectors, manifold absolute pressure sensor, etc.

When the ignition key is in the "ON" position, current flows from the ignition switch through the engine control relay coil to ground.

WIRING INSPECTION

ENGINE CONTROL RELAY CHECK 1. Check the circuit between terminals 5 (+) and 1 (−), then 5 (+) and 3 (−) of the relay, with and without power applied between terminals 2 (+) and 4 (−).

Relay coil (between terminals 5 and 1) Circuit condition When no power is applied: Open When power is applied: Closed

Relay coil (between terminals 5 and 3) Circuit condition When no power is applied: Open When power is applied: Closed
