Checking the Automatic Transaxle Fluid (ATF) Level
1. Drive the vehicle until the automatic transaxle fluid (ATF) reaches normal operating temperature (70 to 80°C).
2. Park the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface.
3. Depress the brake pedal and move the selector lever sequentially through all positions, holding it in each position for a few seconds to fill the hydraulic control system and torque converter with ATF. Then move the selector lever to the "N" position.
4. Before removing the dipstick, clean the area around the dipstick. Remove the dipstick and check the condition of the ATF.
If the ATF has a burnt odor, this indicates contamination with fine particles from wear of the clutch friction plates. In this case, a transaxle overhaul may be required.
5. The normal ATF level must be within the "HOT" range of the dipstick. If the level is below the specified range, add ATF until the level is normal.
Automatic transaxle fluid (ATF):
GENUINE HYUNDAI ATF SP-II M
If the ATF level is below normal, the oil pump will draw in air along with the fluid, causing bubbles and foaming in the hydraulic system. This reduces the operating pressure of the control system, which in turn causes delayed shifting (late gear engagement) and slipping of the friction clutches or brakes. If the ATF level is above normal, the rotation of the planetary gear sets will cause excessive foaming of the fluid, resulting in the same consequences as a low ATF level. In both cases, air bubbles cause overheating, oxidation of the ATF, and varnish deposits that damage valves, clutches and actuators. Foaming also causes ATF to be expelled through the transaxle breather, which is often mistaken for a leak.
6. Insert the dipstick fully into its original tube.
7. When overhauling the automatic transaxle or operating the vehicle under severe driving conditions, the ATF and the ATF filter must be replaced. The ATF replacement procedure is described below. Note that only specified ATF filters must be used in automatic transaxles.
