Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) consists of zirconia and alumina and is installed at the inlet and outlet of the catalytic converter (MCC). It compares the oxygen concentration of the atmosphere with that of the exhaust gas and transmits the exhaust gas oxygen concentration to the ECM. When the air-fuel ratio is rich or lean, it generates approximately 1 V or 0 V, respectively. For this sensor to operate properly, the sensor tip temperature must be above 370 °C. Therefore, it has a heater controlled by the ECM duty signal. When the exhaust gas temperature is below a specified value, the heater warms the sensor tip.
