Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

The Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAPS) is a speed-density type sensor and is installed on the surge tank. It detects the absolute pressure of the surge tank and sends an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed. The MAPS consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid IC that amplifies the output signal of the element. The element is a silicon diaphragm type and uses the pressure-sensitive effect of a semiconductor variable resistor. Because one side of the silicon diaphragm is in a 100% vacuum and the other side is exposed to the intake manifold pressure, this sensor can output an analog signal proportional to the pressure change using the change in silicon.
