MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE SENSOR (MAPS) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

Installed on the intake manifold, the manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAPS) is a speed-density type sensor that detects the absolute pressure in the intake manifold and transmits an analog signal proportional to the pressure to the ECM. Using this signal, the ECM calculates the intake air volume and engine speed. The MAPS consists of a piezoelectric element and a hybrid IC that amplifies the output signal of the element. This element is a silicon diaphragm type, which adapts the pressure-sensitive effect of a semiconductor variable resistor. Because 100% vacuum and intake manifold pressure are applied to both sides of the sensor, this sensor can output a signal proportional to changes in vacuum using silicon variation.
