Engine/Fuel Control System

KNOCK SENSOR (KS) Description and Operation

~1min read

Description

Knock is a phenomenon characterized by vibration and noise that can cause engine damage. The Knock Sensor (KS), installed on the cylinder block, detects engine knock. When knock occurs, the cylinder block vibration is applied as pressure to the piezoelectric element. During knock, the sensor outputs a voltage signal. The ECM retards ignition timing when knock occurs. If the knock disappears after the ignition timing is retarded, the ECM advances the ignition timing. This sequential control can improve torque, engine power and fuel economy.
