Description and Operation

Description

The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMPS) is a Hall effect sensor and detects the camshaft position using a Hall element.

It works together with the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKPS) and identifies the piston position of each cylinder, which the CKPS system cannot detect alone.

The CMPS is installed on the cylinder head cover and uses a target wheel installed on the camshaft. The camshaft position sensor is a Hall effect sensor. As the target wheel passes the Hall sensor, the magnetic field in the sensor changes. The sensor then switches the signal, which creates a square wave.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Check the CMPS and CKPS signal waveforms using the KDS.

Specification: Refer to the Trouble Code Chart.

Removal and Installation

[Bank 1 / Intake]

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector (A).

  3. Remove the sensor by loosening the mounting bolt (B).

    Camshaft Position Sensor Mounting Bolt:

    7,8–11.8 N·m

  4. Install in the reverse order of removal.

[Bank 1/Exhaust]
