Description and Operation
Description
Knock is a phenomenon characterized by undesirable vibration and noise, and it may cause engine damage. The Knock Sensor (KS) is installed on the cylinder block and detects engine knocking.
When knock occurs, the engine block vibration is transmitted as pressure to the piezoelectric element. When knocking occurs, the sensor outputs a voltage signal. The ECM retards the ignition timing when knock occurs. If the knock stops after ignition timing retard, the ECM advances the ignition timing. This sequential control can improve engine power, torque and fuel economy.
