Description and Operation

Description

The Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) system advances or retards the intake and exhaust valve timing according to the control signal from the ECM, which is calculated based on engine speed and load.

CVVT control provides valve overlap or underlap, which improves fuel economy and reduces exhaust emissions (NOx, HC) and improves engine performance by reducing pumping losses, internal exhaust gas recirculation effect, improving combustion stability, improving volumetric efficiency, and increasing expansion work.

This system consists of the following:

- CVVT oil control valve (OCV), which supplies engine oil to the cam phaser or shuts off engine oil to the cam phaser according to the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control signal from the ECM.

- CVVT oil temperature sensor (OTS), which measures the engine oil temperature,

- Cam Phaser, which changes the camshaft phase using the hydraulic pressure of the engine oil.

Engine oil supplied from the CVVT oil control valve changes the camshaft phase in the direction of engine rotation (Intake Advance / Exhaust Retard) or in the opposite direction (Intake Retard / Exhaust Advance) by rotating the rotor connected to the camshaft inside the cam phaser.

Repair Procedures

Inspection

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Disconnect the OCV connector.

  3. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the OCV.

  4. Make sure the resistance is within specification.

    Specification: 6.9–7.9 [20 °C]

Removal and Installation

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

  2. Disconnect the CVVT oil control valve connector.

  3. Remove the valves (A) after loosening the mounting bolt.

    CVVT oil control valve mounting bolt:

    9,8–11.8 N·m

    [Bank 1 / Intake]

    [Bank 1/Exhaust]

  4. Install in the reverse order of removal.
