The rear parking assist system helps the driver when reversing the vehicle by sounding a chime when an object is detected within 120 cm (47 in.) behind the vehicle. This system is a supplement and is not intended to replace the need for extreme caution and driver vigilance. The detection range of the sensors is limited. When reversing, be as alert as you would be if your vehicle were not equipped with a rear parking assist system.

WARNING

The rear parking assist system is an additional function only. The operation of the rear parking assist system can be affected by several factors (including ambient conditions).

It is the driver's responsibility to always look behind the vehicle before and while reversing.

Operation of the Rear Parking Assist System

Operating Condition

  • The system activates when the vehicle is in reverse and the ignition key is in the ON position.
  • The detection distance of the rear parking assist system is approximately 120 cm (47 in.).
  • If more than one object is detected at the same time, the closest object is recognized first.

Warning Sounds

  • If an object is between 120 and 81 cm (47 in. to 32 in.) from the rear bumper, the buzzer sounds intermittently.
  • If an object is between 80 and 41 cm (31 in. to 16 in.) from the rear bumper, the buzzer sounds more frequently.
  • If an object is less than 40 cm (15 in.) from the rear bumper, the buzzer sounds continuously.

Rear Parking Assist System Malfunction The rear parking assist system may not operate properly when:

  1. Frost is on the sensor (it will operate normally once the frost has disappeared).
  2. The sensor is covered with foreign matter such as snow or water, or the sensor is obstructed (it will operate normally once the sensor is cleaned and unobstructed).
  3. Driving on an uneven surface (unpaved road, gravel, bumps, slope).
  4. Objects producing excessive noise (car horn, motorcycle engine, truck air brakes) that are outside the sensor's detection range.
  5. Heavy rain or water spray.
  6. Wireless or cellular transmitters outside the sensor's range.
  7. The sensor is covered with snow.
  8. A trailer is connected.

The detection range may be reduced if:

  1. The sensor is dirty with snow or water. (The detection range will return to normal once the sensor is cleaned.)
  2. The outside temperature is too high or too low.

The following objects may not be detected by the sensor:

  1. Pointed or thin objects such as ropes, chains, or small posts.
  2. Objects that tend to absorb the sensor's frequency, such as clothing, spongy materials, or snow.
  3. Undetectable objects less than 1 m (40 in.) high and 14 cm (6 in.) in diameter.

Rear Parking Assist System Warnings

  • The sound emitted by the rear parking assist system may not be sequential depending on the speed and shape of the detected objects.
  • A malfunction of the rear parking assist system may occur if the height of the vehicle bumper or the sensor installation has been modified or damaged. Any equipment or accessories not installed at the factory may also affect sensor performance.
  • The sensor may not recognize objects less than 40 cm (15 in.) away, or it may misjudge the distance. Use caution.
  • If the sensor is frozen or dirty with snow, dirt, or water, it may not operate until it is cleaned.
  • Do not push, scratch, or strike the sensor; you may damage it.

NOTICE

The buzzer can only detect objects within its range; it cannot detect objects where no sensor is installed. Small thin objects, such as stakes or the like, located between the sensors may not be detected.

Always use a visual check when reversing.

Be sure to inform every driver of the vehicle of the capabilities and limitations of the rear parking assist system.

WARNING

Be careful when driving near objects on the road, especially pedestrians and, in particular, children. Be aware that some objects may not be detected by the sensors due to their distance, size, or composition, all factors that may limit sensor effectiveness. Always perform a visual inspection to make sure there are no obstructions around the vehicle before moving in any direction.

Self-Diagnosis

If you hear no warning sound, or if the buzzer sounds intermittently when you shift into reverse ("R"), this may indicate a malfunction in the rear parking assist system.

In this case, have your vehicle checked by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

Your new vehicle warranty does not cover accidents, vehicle damage, or injuries to occupants caused by a malfunction of the parking assist system. Always drive with extreme caution.
