Réception FM

How Car Radio Works

AM and FM signals are broadcast from transmission towers located around the city. These signals are picked up by your vehicle's radio antenna. The signal then reaches the radio receiver, which sends it to the speakers.

When your vehicle receives a strong radio signal, the radio's precise engineering ensures the best possible sound reproduction. Sometimes the received signal may be of poor quality or weak. This may be caused by factors such as distance from the radio station or the presence of buildings, bridges or other large obstacles in the area.

Réception AM

AM broadcasts can be received over greater distances than FM broadcasts. This is because AM radio waves are transmitted at low frequencies. These long, low-frequency radio waves can follow the curvature of the Earth rather than travel in a straight line through the atmosphere. In addition, they follow the shape of obstructions, providing better coverage.

Station radio FM

FM broadcasts are transmitted at high frequencies and do not follow the surface of the Earth. As a result, FM broadcasts generally begin to weaken at a short distance from the station. In addition, FM signals are easily affected by buildings, mountains and other obstructions.

This may cause listening conditions that could lead you to believe there is a problem with your radio. The following conditions are normal and do not indicate a problem:

Comment fonctionne la radio d'auto

  • Fading - as the vehicle moves away from the radio station, the signal weakens and the sound begins to fade out. In this case, we suggest tuning to a new station.
  • Static/Electrostatic Noise - Weak FM signals or large obstructions between the broadcast tower and your radio may interfere with the signal and cause static or crackling noise. Reducing the treble level may reduce the effect until the interference disappears.
Comment fonctionne la radio d'auto

  • Station Switching - When the FM signal weakens, a stronger signal on the same frequency may be picked up. This happens because the radio is designed to lock onto the clearest signal. If this occurs, tune to another station with a stronger signal.
  • Multipath Cancellation - Radio signals received from several directions may cause distortion or flutter. This is caused by a direct and reflected signal from the same station, or by signals from two stations on adjacent frequencies. If this occurs, tune to another station until the condition clears.

Satellite Radio Reception

You may experience satellite radio reception problems in the following situations.

Réception avec la radio par satellite

  • Driving through a tunnel or an enclosed parking garage.
  • Driving under the upper deck of a double-deck highway.
  • Driving under a bridge.
  • Driving near a tall vehicle (such as a truck or bus) that could block the signal.
  • Driving in a valley where surrounding mountains or hills could block the signal.
  • Driving on a mountain road where mountains could block the signal.
Réception avec la radio par satellite

  • Driving in an area where tall trees (over 10 m high) could block the signal, such as a dense forest.
  • The signal may become weak in areas not covered by a network of terrestrial repeater stations.

NOTICE: Also note that other unforeseen circumstances may affect reception of the SIRIUS satellite radio signal.

Use of a Cellular Phone or Two-Way Radio

Using a cellular phone in the vehicle may interfere with the radio equipment. This does not mean that the equipment is faulty.

In such cases, use the cellular phone as far away from the radio equipment as possible.

CAUTION

When using a communication device such as a cellular phone or two-way radio in the vehicle, a separate antenna must be used. If the phone or radio is used with only a built-in antenna, it may interfere with the vehicle's electrical system, which could affect proper vehicle operation.

WARNING

Do not use a cellular phone while driving. Pull over to a safe location before using your phone.

Disc Care

  • If the vehicle interior is too hot, lower the windows to ventilate the vehicle before using the radio.
  • It is illegal to copy and use MP3/WMA files without permission.
Use only legally created CDs.
  • Never apply volatile agents such as benzene or thinner, ordinary cleaners, or sprays for analog records to a CD.
  • To avoid damaging the disc surface, hold and carry the CD by its edge or center hole and edge only.
  • Clean the disc surface with a soft cloth before playing (wipe from the center outward toward the edge).
  • Do not damage the disc surface or attach any stickers or paper.
  • Make sure to insert only CDs into the player (insert one CD at a time).
  • Keep CDs in their cases to protect them from scratches and dirt.
  • Depending on the type (CD-R/CD-RW), some discs may not function normally, depending on the manufacturer or the copying or recording method. In some cases, continued use of these discs may cause the vehicle's hi-fi audio system to malfunction.
  • NOTICE - Playing a Copy-Protected or Non-Compliant CD

Some copy-protected CDs that do not comply with the international audio CD standard (Red Book) may not play on the audio system.

Note that if you try to play a copy-protected CD and the CD player does not operate properly, the CD may be defective rather than the player.
