Injection Pump Timing
GENERAL INFORMATION
Injection pump timing must always be adjusted after tensioning, removing or replacing the timing belt, and after loosening the threaded connections on the injection pump or timing belt sprockets. The start of injection timing of the injection pump can be checked with the engine installed or removed. This procedure describes the check with the engine installed. A measuring instrument with an adapter for installation in the pump is required.
Check conditions: The timing belt is tensioned.
The valve timing is adjusted correctly.
The engine is warmed up to operating temperature. The coolant temperature gauge needle is at the middle of the scale.
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Turn the cold start device rods clockwise.

3. Insert a small wooden block (1), 15 mm thick, between the cold start device plunger and the drive rod.
4. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in the direction of engine rotation to return the cold start device to its normal position.

5. Set the crankshaft to the TDC position of the No. 1 piston. The white mark (2) must align with the pointer (3).

6. Loosen the high-pressure fuel line union nuts at the pump using a flare nut wrench. Hold the valve with a open-end wrench.
7. Remove the threaded plug (check hole) from the injection pump cover.

8. Screw the dial indicator adapter (measuring range 0–3.0 mm) (4) into the hole in place of the plug, e.g. NISSAN KV-11.229.352.
9. Adjust the dial so that the pointer is between 1.0 and 2.0 mm.
10. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to 20°–25° before TDC. Make sure the adapter is installed correctly. Set the dial indicator to 0 mm.
11. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and set it to 9° after TDC. The yellow mark (1) is now aligned with the pointer (3) (see illustration above). The dial indicator now shows the plunger stroke of the injection pump. Required value: 0.79–0.85 mm.
Warning: If the measured value is within the specified limits, no adjustment is required. If readjustment is performed, set the value to 0.82 mm. Adjustment
PROCEDURE
1. If the measured value does not match the required value, slightly loosen the 4 pump mounting nuts and bolts.

2. Turn the pump until the gauge shows the required value.
3. If the measured value is lower than the required value: turn the pump housing away from the engine (5).
4. If the measured value is higher than the required value: turn the pump housing toward the engine (6).

5. Tighten the pump mounting bolts and nuts alternately.
6. Repeat the injection timing check and adjust if necessary.
7. Tighten the pump mounting nuts to 15 N·m and the bolts to 55 N·m.
8. Remove the dial indicator adapter and install the plug with a new gasket to 15 N·m. If the plug leaks, tighten further to 20 N·m.
9. Tighten the high-pressure fuel lines to 25 N·m.
10. Bleed air from the fuel system.
