Wheel Cylinder

~2min read

* If the wheel cylinder needs to be overhauled (usually due to brake fluid leakage), first check the price of replacement parts or the cost of a rebuilt or new cylinder. Purchase a repair kit before starting the overhaul. Always repair both wheel cylinders together, never repair only one of them.

Removal

PROCEDURE
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands. Chock the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling unexpectedly.
2. Remove the rear brake shoes (see subsection 9.8).
3. Clean the dirt from around the wheel cylinder.

4. Отсоедините тормозную трубку (1) при помощи накидного гаечного ключа, если

4. Disconnect the brake tube (1) using a flare nut wrench, if available. Do not remove the tube from the cylinder. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts (2).
5. Remove the wheel cylinder from the rear brake backing plate and place it on a clean workbench. Immediately cover the brake tube opening to prevent brake fluid loss and the entry of dirt into the tube.

Bulkhead

PROCEDURE
1. Remove the bleeder valve, caps, pistons, boots, and springs from the cylinder (see figure Rear Drum Brake Components).
2. Wash the wheel cylinder with brake fluid, alcohol, or brake parts cleaning fluid.

* Do not use gasoline-based solvents to clean brake components.

3. Dry the wheel cylinder with clean compressed air and blow out the passages.
4. Inspect the inner surface of the cylinder for corrosion and scoring. Replace the cylinder if its inner surface is scored or shows signs of corrosion.
5. Lubricate the new cups with brake fluid.
6. Assemble the wheel cylinder components. Make sure the cup lips face inward.

Installation

PROCEDURE
1. Install the wheel cylinder in position and hand-tighten the mounting bolts. Connect the brake tube to the wheel cylinder. Check that the connection is secure. Tighten the wheel cylinder mounting bolts to the torque specified in the Specifications section at the beginning of this chapter.
2. Securely tighten the brake tube connection and install the brake shoes (see subsection 9.8).
3. Bleed the brake system (see subsection 9.12).
4. Check the brake operation before returning the vehicle to normal use.
