Brake System

Stop Lamp Switch

~1min read

The stop lamp switch is mounted on a bracket above the brake pedal. The switch turns on the stop lamps at the rear of the vehicle when the brake pedal is pressed.

Inspection

PROCEDURE
1. To check the brake light switch, verify that the brake lights come on when the brake pedal is depressed and go off when the brake pedal is released. If not, adjust the switch (switch adjustment is part of the brake pedal adjustment) (refer to Subsection 9.16).
2. If the brake lights still do not come on, there is no voltage to the switch, the switch is faulty, or there is an open circuit between the switch and the brake lights. It is possible that all brake light bulbs have burned out, but this is unlikely.
3. Using a voltmeter or test lamp, check for voltage at one terminal of the switch. If there is no voltage, check the circuit continuity from the switch to the fuse block. If there is voltage, check for voltage at the other switch terminal with the brake pedal depressed. If there is no voltage, replace the switch. If there is voltage, check the continuity of the electrical circuit from the switch to the brake lights (if necessary, refer to Subsection 12.25.9).

Replacement

PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect the brake light switch electrical connector.
3. Loosen the lock nut and unscrew the switch from the pedal bracket.
4. Installation is the reverse of removal.
5. Adjust the brake pedal and the brake light switch (refer to Subsection 9.16).
