GENERAL INFORMATION
The models described in this manual are equipped with a hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with front and rear circuit separation. Front wheels are fitted with disc brakes, and rear wheels are fitted with either drum or disc brakes, depending on the model. Both the front and rear brakes are self-adjusting. Disc brakes adjust automatically as the brake pads wear, while drum brakes have an adjusting mechanism that is actuated when the vehicle is parked with the parking brake applied.
Hydraulic System
The hydraulic system consists of two circuits. The brake master cylinder has two reservoirs for the two circuits. If brake fluid leaks or one of the circuits fails, the other circuit will continue to operate. The dual proportioning valve, which is installed on the rear wall of the engine compartment, balances the braking force between the front and rear brakes. On models equipped with an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), the load-sensing proportioning valve limits the pressure in the rear brake circuit depending on the vehicle load.
Vacuum Booster
The vacuum booster uses the pressure difference between the engine intake manifold and atmospheric pressure to boost braking force. It is installed on the rear wall of the engine compartment.
Parking Brake
The parking brake operates only the rear brakes. It is actuated by cables. The vehicle is held by the parking brake using the lever installed on the center console.
Service
After disassembling any brake system component, check the operation of the brake system before returning the vehicle to normal service. When checking the brakes, perform a test stop on a level, dry, flat surface. Testing under other conditions may give incorrect results.
Check the operation of the brake system at various speeds and with various braking force. Braking must be even, and the vehicle must not pull to either side. Avoid locking the brakes, as this causes the vehicle to skid, reduces braking efficiency and vehicle control.
Tire condition, vehicle load and wheel alignment are also factors that affect brake performance.
