Parking Brake Cables
Replacement
PROCEDURE
Cables Between Equalizer and Brakes
1. Loosen the rear wheel mounting nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands. Chock the front wheels. Remove the rear wheel.
2. Make sure the parking brake is released, then, on drum brakes, remove the brake drum.

3. On models with drum brakes, remove the brake shoes and disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever (see subsection 9.8). Remove the two cable mounting bolts (indicated by arrows) on the rear brake backing plate and pull the cable out through the hole in the backing plate.
4. On models with disc brakes, disconnect the cable from the caliper by removing the clip and pin while pressing the parking brake crank lever. Remove the cable sheath clamp and remove the cable.

5. Remove the clamp nut near the front mounting of the longitudinal link.

6. Remove the bolt (indicated by arrow) securing the cable clamp to the floor panel.
7. Remove the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter heat shields (see subsection 6.9).

8. Remove the clamp mounting bolts (indicated by right arrows). Remove the nylon bushings from the brackets (indicated by center arrows). Disconnect the front ends of the cables from the equalizer (indicated by left arrows).
9. Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. Apply a thin coat of high-temperature grease to the end of the cable that attaches to the equalizer.
10. Adjust the parking brake after cable installation is complete (see subsection 9.14). Cable Between Equalizer and Parking Brake Lever
11. Remove the center console (see subsection 11.24).
12. With the lever lowered, loosen the lock nut and adjusting nut (see subsection 9.14) and disconnect the cable from the lever.
13. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands.
14. Remove the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter heat shields (see subsection 6.9).
15. Turn the end of the cable 90° and disconnect it from the equalizer.
16. Remove the rubber grommet from the floor panel and pull the cable out through the hole in the panel.
17. Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. Apply a thin coat of high-temperature grease to the portion of the cable that attaches to the equalizer. Also coat the edges of the rubber grommet with silicone sealant to prevent water from passing through.
18. Adjust the parking brake lever travel after installation is complete (see subsection 9.14).
