Brake Pedal Free Play

Brake pedal free play is the distance between the released pedal position and the position where resistance begins to be felt when the pedal is pressed.

Brake pedal free play is 1–6 mm.

Inspection and Adjustment

PROCEDURE

Pedal Height
1. Measure pedal height from the surface of the pedal rubber pad to the floor panel (see Brake Pedal Height figure) and compare the result with the value in the Technical Data table. If the pedal height is not within specification, adjust it.
2. Remove the steering column lower trim panel and air duct.
3. Disconnect the connector from the stop lamp switch.
4. Loosen the stop lamp switch lock nut and remove the switch.
5. Loosen the pushrod lock nut.
6. Adjust pedal height by turning the pedal pushrod.
7. Tighten the pushrod lock nut.
8. Install the stop lamp switch and screw it in until it contacts the pedal arm.
9. Screw the switch in one additional turn.

10. Измерьте расстояние (зазор А) между выключателем фар стоп-сигнала и педалью

10. Measure the clearance (dimension A) between the stop lamp switch and the pedal and compare it with the value in the Technical Data section at the beginning of this chapter. If the clearance differs from the specification, repeat the two previous steps and check the clearance again.
11. Tighten the stop lamp switch lock nut.
12. Connect the stop lamp switch connector.
13. Check that the stop lamps illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and go out when it is released.
14. Check pedal free play.

Pedal Free Play
15. Turn off the engine if it is running and depress the brake pedal several times to bleed the vacuum from the brake booster.
16. Press the brake pedal by hand until resistance is felt, then measure the distance between the released position and the position where resistance begins (see Brake Pedal Free Play figure). Compare the result with the brake pedal free play specification (see Technical Data table). If free play is too large or too small, adjust it as follows:
17. Check the stop lamp switch clearance. If it is within specification, check the brake system mechanism.

Brake Pedal Reserve Travel
18. Start the engine, depress the brake pedal several times, then press it firmly and hold it in that position.
19. Pedal reserve travel is measured from the floor to the edge of the depressed pedal. Compare the result with the value in the Technical Data table.
20. If pedal reserve travel is less than specified, check the rear brake adjustment and/or the clearance between the booster pushrod and the master cylinder piston. If the brake pedal sinks slowly, bleed the brake system (see subsection 9.12).
