General . Safety notes. Overview. Switching on/off
The ultrasonic sensors of the PDC system in the BMW 5 Series G30 provide precise information about the vehicle surroundings and make parking safer. With a range of up to 2 meters, they detect objects early and warn from 70 cm onward of potential collisions. For objects behind the vehicle, the warning even starts from 1.50 m. The sensors are located in the bumpers and must be kept free of dirt or stickers. The system can be switched on or off manually at any time using the Parking Assistant button. Automatic activation when obstacles are detected at close range is particularly helpful. Safety notes warn of physical limits, for example at high speeds or in poor visibility. The system supplements but does not replace the driver's attention.
General
The ultrasonic sensors for measuring distances are located in the bumpers and, if applicable, on the sides of the vehicle.
The range is approx. 2 m, depending on the obstacle and ambient conditions.
An audible warning sounds when a collision is imminent, at a distance of approx. 70 cm from the object.
For objects behind the vehicle, the audible warning sounds already at a distance of approx. 1.50 m.
Safety notes
WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess the traffic situation. Due to system limitations, the system cannot always respond appropriately on its own in all traffic situations.
There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving style to traffic conditions. Observe the traffic situation and intervene actively in relevant situations. WARNING Due to physical factors, high speeds with PDC activated can result in a delayed warning. There is a risk of injury or damage to property. Avoid driving rapidly toward an object. Avoid pulling away quickly while PDC is not yet active.

Prerequisites for operation
Ensure full functionality:
- Do not cover the sensors, e.g. with stickers or bicycle carriers.
- Keep the sensors clean and free of obstructions.
Switching on/off
Switch on automatically
The system switches on automatically in the following situations:
- When reverse gear is selected with the engine running.
- When approaching detected obstacles while driving slower than approx. 4 km/h. The activation distance depends on the situation.
Automatic activation when obstacles are detected can be switched on and off.
Via iDrive:
- "My Vehicle"
- "Vehicle settings"
- "Parking"
- "Automatic PDC activation": Only with corresponding equipment.
- "Automatic PDC activation"
The setting is saved for the currently used driver profile.
Depending on equipment, a corresponding camera view is also switched on.
Automatic switch-off when driving forward
The system switches off when a certain distance or speed is exceeded.
If necessary, switch the system on again.
Switch on/off manually
Press the Parking Assistant button.
- On: LED lights up.
- Off: LED goes out.
If reverse gear is engaged when the Parking Assistant button is pressed, the image from the rear view camera is displayed.
The ultrasonic sensors of the BMW 5 G30/G31 are a central element of the Park Distance Control system and provide reliable detection of the vehicle surroundings. They accurately measure distances to obstacles and thus support safe maneuvering and parking. The sensors are optimally positioned in the bumpers and side areas to ensure the best possible coverage.
A particularly practical feature is the option to activate PDC both automatically and manually. The acoustic warnings are clear and can be adapted to individual needs via iDrive. Visual displays on the Control Display also help to detect obstacles early and react safely.
The BMW 5 G30/G31 thus offers a well-designed system that combines comfort and safety when parking at the highest level.
