Adjust Shift Cable

~1min read

The selected selector lever position (P-R-N-D, etc.) is engaged via the shift cable on the automatic transmission. Adjustment is required after installing the transmission or after disconnecting the shift linkage.

Check adjustment
  • Move selector lever to position "P".

  • Raise the front of the vehicle.

  • Make sure the shift shaft lever on the transmission is in position "P". To do this, turn the front wheels until the parking lock engages (front wheels locked).

  • If the front wheels do not lock, adjust the shift cable.

  • In the engine compartment, disconnect the shift cable from shift shaft lever -1- on top of the transmission. To do this, pull off the retaining pin.

  • Move the shift shaft lever until the parking lock engages; check by turning the front wheels.

  • Move selector lever to position "P".

  • In this position, the holes in the shift shaft lever and the head of the shift cable must align, and the retaining pin must insert easily. Otherwise, adjust the cable length.

  • To adjust, push the rubber boot back on the cable and screw the head of the shift cable out or in on the thread until the holes in the shift shaft and cable align and the retaining pin inserts easily. Loosen the lock nut beforehand; tighten the lock nut after adjustment.

  • Insert the retaining pin and secure it by engaging it; slide the rubber boot back on.

  • Lower the vehicle.
