When engaging a gear, a distinction is made between the lateral movement (selection movement) in neutral position and the actual shifting movement. Both movements are transmitted to the deflection levers on the transmission via a rod.

On the 1.4 L engine, the shifting movement is transmitted to the transmission via a cable. A lockout prevents accidental engagement of reverse gear. To overcome the reverse gear lockout, the shift lever must be pressed downward. This movement is transmitted to the transmission via another cable, where it releases the lockout.

Adjustment of the shift mechanism is not possible. If there is noticeable play, install new parts.
