Driver and Passenger Safety

Airbags

~2min read

Your vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which includes front airbags and is designed to protect the driver and front passenger from striking their head or chest against the steering wheel or instrument panel in a moderate or severe frontal collision (see page 28).

Your vehicle is equipped with side airbags that protect the upper body of the driver or front passenger in moderate and severe side impacts (see page 29).

For vehicles equipped with side curtain airbags only

Some vehicle versions are equipped with side curtain airbags that protect the heads of the driver, front passenger, and passengers seated in the outboard rear seats in moderate and severe side impacts (see page 30).

You should know the following most important information about the airbags installed in your vehicle:

Airbags can never replace seat belts.

Supplemental airbags are intended only as an additional means of protection to be used together with seat belts.

Front airbags do not provide protection in a rear impact, a side impact, or in minor frontal collisions.

Airbag deployment can cause injury.

To perform its protective function effectively, the airbag must inflate with gas at a very high speed. Therefore, although the airbag protects occupants from serious injury and in some cases even saves lives, it can cause injury, and sometimes serious injury up to and including death, if the driver or front passenger is not properly restrained by the seat belt or is not positioned correctly on the seat.

What you should do: Fasten your seat belt while sitting as far from the steering wheel as possible (without compromising your ability to control the vehicle). The front passenger should move the seat rearward, as far as possible from the instrument panel.

More detailed information on ensuring maximum safety for the driver and passengers is provided below.

It must be understood, however, that no passive safety system, even the most advanced, can fully guarantee protection from injury or death, even when occupants are wearing seat belts and the airbags deploy properly.
