Additional Safety Precautions

Do not hold a child on your lap. If you are not wearing the seat belt during a collision, the force of impact will throw you forward and crush the child against the instrument panel. If you are wearing the seat belt, you will not be able to hold the child, who may suffer serious injury or death.

Do not share one seat belt between yourself and a child. In a crash, the belt may compress the child with great force, resulting in serious injury or death.

Never use the same seat belt to restrain two children at the same time. Failure to follow this warning may result in serious injury to both occupants in a crash.

If a child can reach an unused seat belt, make sure it is inserted into the buckle and fully wound onto the locking retractor.

If a child wraps a loose seat belt around the neck, it may result in serious or even fatal injury. (Information on activating and deactivating the locking retractor is provided on pages 52 and 56.)

WARNING: Use the master switch to disconnect the power supply to the power windows so children cannot open the windows. Children may play with the power windows by raising and lowering them, which could result in an accident or distract the driver from monitoring the road (see page 168).

Never leave children unattended in the vehicle. In some countries, leaving children unattended in a vehicle is against the law and may result in serious consequences.

For example, an infant or young child left unattended in a vehicle on a hot day may die from heatstroke. If children are left unattended in the vehicle with the key in the ignition, the engine may be started and the vehicle may move unintentionally, which may injure the children or others nearby.

Lock all doors, including the rear door, when the vehicle is not in use.

Children may accidentally lock themselves in the vehicle while playing. Teach your children not to play in or near the vehicle.

Keep vehicle keys and the remote door transmitter out of children's reach.

Even small children can open a door, start the ignition, or open the luggage compartment, which may lead to accidents, including fatal ones.

WARNING: When leaving the vehicle with children or adult passengers inside, always remove the key from the ignition and take it with you.

Do not allow children to kneel on the seat or ride standing up. Inertia forces during sudden braking will throw the child forward. The child may be seriously injured or even killed.
