Seat Belt Care

~2min read

For your safety, regularly inspect the condition of the seat belts.

To inspect, fully pull out each belt from the retractor and check for fraying, cuts, burns, or signs of wear.

Check the buckle operation and the retractor's ability to retract the belt smoothly. If the belt does not retract smoothly, cleaning may help (page 429).

Seat belts that are in poor condition cannot provide protection and must be replaced immediately.

WARNING: Do not make any modifications to the seat belts yourself that could degrade or block the operation of the retractor locking mechanism or the ability to manually adjust belt length to remove slack.

If the seat belts have been subjected to heavy loads in a collision, have a dealer inspect the belts and replace them with new ones if necessary.

Remember that seat belts in a vehicle that has been involved in an accident cannot provide the required level of protection in a subsequent collision.

Along with inspecting the seat belts, the dealer must check the condition of the seat belt anchor points on the body. Seat belt pretensioners that were activated in a collision must be replaced with new ones.
