Using Booster Cushions

If an older child can no longer ride forward-facing in a child restraint, it is recommended to transport them on a booster cushion installed on the rear seat until the child is large enough to use the seat belt properly.
There are two types of booster cushions:
with a high or low backrest. In all cases, booster cushions must meet safety standards (page 44), and the manufacturer's instructions must be followed when installing them.
If the child will sit on a booster cushion installed in the front seat, move the seat fully rearward and properly secure the child with the seat belt.
A booster cushion may be used as long as the child's size allows: once the tops of the child's ears are above the top of the rear seatback, stop using the booster cushion. Such a child may be secured with the lap/shoulder belt without a booster cushion.
A list of child restraint systems recommended for use in European countries is provided on page 47.

Some booster cushions have removable backrests. Install the backrest on the booster cushion and connect it to the vehicle seatback, following the manufacturer's instructions. Be sure to route the shoulder belt through the guide loop on the backrest and make sure the seat belt does not contact the child's neck (see page 17).
