Towing Equipment

~1min read

Special equipment is required to tow a trailer. It must match the design of the vehicle and trailer, the towing conditions, and the characteristics of the cargo being carried.

Obtain information about the trailer and the required equipment from the dealer where the trailer is purchased or rented, and follow all recommendations of the trailer manufacturer for its installation and operation, as well as the recommendations in this section of the Owner's Manual. Strictly observe the requirements of traffic regulations and other regulatory documents governing the use of trailers and towing equipment.

Trailer Hitch

The trailer hitch must be securely attached to the load-bearing structure of the vehicle body.

Information on the trailer hitch mounting locations is provided on page 487.

Safety Chains

Always use safety chains when connecting the trailer to the vehicle. The ends of the safety chains must be securely attached to the designated attachment points on the trailer and the vehicle hitch, and the chains must be crossed under the trailer tongue to prevent the front end of the tongue from dropping to the road if the trailer separates from the vehicle. The chains must be long enough not to interfere with turning the combination at minimum turning radius, but must not be allowed to drag on the ground.

Trailer Brake System

If you intend to purchase a trailer equipped with brakes, make sure they have an electric actuation system. The hydraulic service brake system of your vehicle is not designed to be connected to a trailer brake system.

Any method of connecting the trailer brake system to the vehicle's hydraulic brake system, however attractive it may seem, will reduce the vehicle's braking efficiency and reduce driving safety.

For questions about installing an electric trailer brake control system, contact the trailer seller and refer to the trailer manufacturer's documentation.
