i-SHIFT Transmission (Automated Manual Transmission) - Driving in Automatic Mode

~2min read

The i-SHIFT transmission automatically shifts gears (1st through 6th) depending on vehicle speed and accelerator pedal position.

When starting to drive, the system activates automatic mode to provide smooth acceleration. The "A" symbol will appear on the upper display. As the vehicle accelerates, the system automatically upshifts from low to high gear.

Downshifting is also performed automatically.

When decelerating, the transmission downshifts down to 1st gear until the vehicle comes to a complete stop.

When starting from a standstill, the transmission operates in 1st gear in automatic mode. Before moving off, make sure the "A" (Automatic mode) symbol is displayed.

To switch between automatic and manual modes, move the shift lever from the "D" (Drive) position to the left, into the A/M position. You can also return to manual mode by moving the lever up or down from the "D" (Drive) position. Finally, manual mode can be engaged by pulling toward you any paddle switch located on the steering wheel.

In automatic mode, the "A" indicator is shown on the upper display and the tachometer indicator is turned off. When switching to manual mode, the "A" indicator disappears from the display and is replaced by the number of the engaged gear.

For rapid acceleration while driving, you can initiate an automatic downshift by pressing the accelerator pedal fully down.

At the moment the clutch disengages during a gear change, you may feel the vehicle slow down, depending on driving conditions.

During upshifts and downshifts you may hear a mechanical noise or feel a vibration. This is not a sign of a malfunction, but a result of the mechanical transmission components shifting gears on signals from the transmission control system.

Downshifting makes climbing easier and allows you to use engine braking on descents.

To downshift, move the lever rearward or pull the left (—) paddle switch toward you. The transmission will then switch to manual mode. To return to automatic mode, move the shift lever to the left, into the A/M position.

Engine Speed Limiter

If you exceed the maximum permitted vehicle speed for the current gear, engine speed may enter the red zone of the tachometer. You may notice a change in engine operation. In this case, the engine control module begins limiting crankshaft speed by reducing fuel supply. Engine operation returns to normal as soon as the tachometer needle leaves the red zone of the scale.
