i-SHIFT Transmission (Automated Manual Transmission) - Driving in Manual Shift Mode

~3min read

Manual upshifts and downshifts are performed with the shift lever or with the paddle switches located on the steering wheel. To enter manual mode, either move the lever to the A/M position, push the lever forward or rearward from the "D" (Drive) position, or pull toward you any paddle switch (with the shift lever in the "D" (Drive) position).

To upshift, push the lever forward. To downshift, pull the lever rearward.

You can also shift gears using the right (+) and left (—) paddle switches located on the steering wheel. The right (+) switch is used to upshift, and the left (—) switch is used to downshift.

Each lever movement or paddle switch press shifts the gear up or down by one step. Under certain driving conditions, the transmission may upshift or downshift by two or more steps at once.

When switching to manual mode, the "A" automatic mode indicator on the upper display is replaced by the number of the engaged gear. At the same time, the tachometer indicator is activated (if it was enabled during system setup). To return to automatic mode, move the shift lever to the left from the drive position. The "A" indicator will appear on the upper display.

In manual mode and under normal driving conditions, the transmission keeps the gear selected by the driver.

If the accelerator pedal is pressed fully down, no automatic downshift occurs. However, if the driver presses the brake pedal and the vehicle slows to a certain speed, the transmission automatically downshifts to a lower gear so that the engine does not stall.

If the driver attempts to manually downshift under conditions where engine speed would rise to the point where the tachometer needle enters the red zone, the transmission will not perform the shift. If the vehicle speed drops to an allowable value while the indicator is flashing, the downshift will be performed and the number of the newly selected gear will be shown on the display.

Similarly, if the driver attempts to upshift before engine speed reaches the value permitted for that gear, the shift will not occur.

When starting from a standstill, the transmission operates in 1st gear, after which you must manually upshift from 1st through 6th gear. When driving uphill, it is recommended to downshift to increase torque at the wheels. Upshift when the needle begins to approach the red zone of the tachometer scale.

When decelerating, you can shift into a lower gear to apply additional engine braking. This driving technique allows you to maintain a safe speed when descending steep grades without overheating the brake components excessively. Before downshifting, make sure that the tachometer needle does not enter the red zone.

Do not select high gears when driving at low speed.

When decelerating, the transmission downshifts down to first gear, until the vehicle comes to a complete stop. In addition, the gearbox automatically shifts to first gear when the vehicle slows to a speed of approximately 5 km/h or less.

WARNING

Sudden acceleration or deceleration on slippery roads may cause loss of vehicle control and result in an accident.

Exercise extreme caution when driving on slippery roads.

Always shift to the highest gear that allows the engine to run normally without strain and the vehicle to accelerate smoothly. This reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
