Starting the Engine (for Gasoline Engine Models) - Manual Transmission

~2min read

1. Apply the parking brake.

2. In low ambient temperatures, turn off all auxiliary electrical loads to reduce the load on the battery.

3. Fully depress the clutch pedal and move the gear shift lever to the neutral position.

4. Turn the ignition key to the ON (II) position (Ignition on).

5. Without pressing the accelerator pedal, press the engine start button. Do not hold the engine start button pressed for longer than 15 seconds. If the engine does not start immediately, wait at least 10 seconds before attempting to start the engine again to allow the electric starter to cool down.

ВНИМАНИЕ
WARNING

The immobilizer is an effective anti-theft device that protects the vehicle from possible theft. An attempt to start the engine with an incorrect key or any other device will result in the engine fuel system being disabled. For more information on the immobilizer system, refer to page 149.

6. If the engine cannot be started with the starter operating continuously for 15 seconds, or if the engine starts and then stalls immediately, try starting the engine again (see step 5) while pressing the accelerator pedal to half of its full travel. After the engine starts successfully, release the accelerator pedal to avoid a sharp increase in engine idle speed.

7. If the engine still cannot be started, fully depress the accelerator pedal and hold it down while the starter is operating. If the engine still does not start, try again with the accelerator pedal partially depressed (see step 6).

ВНИМАНИЕ
WARNING

Starting the engine is more difficult in low ambient temperatures. At high altitudes (above 2400 m above sea level), where the air is very thin, starting the engine is even more difficult.

In sub-zero ambient temperatures, or if the vehicle has not been used for several days, allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes before driving off (in Germany, under paragraph 30 of the StVO regulations, warming up the engine while the vehicle is stationary is prohibited in some cases).
