Rear hub carrier

~3min read

Brake dust created by brake pad wear contains asbestos, which is hazardous to health. Do not use petrol-based solvents to clean the brake mechanism. Use only a special brake mechanism cleaner.

Removal

PROCEDURE
1. Loosen the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and support it on stands. Chock the front wheels and remove the rear wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum (on models with rear drum brakes) or remove the brake disc and caliper (on models with rear disc brakes).

3. Detach the brake hose from the bracket on the suspension strut (clip – indicated by the arrow).
4. Remove the wheel hub and bearing (see Subsection 10.13).
5. Remove the rear brake backing plate and brake mechanism (on models with rear drum brakes). It is not necessary to disassemble the brake mechanism or disconnect the parking brake cable. Suspend the backing plate together with the rear brake mechanism from the suspension spring using wire. Do not kink the brake pipe.
6. On models with ABS, remove the wheel speed sensor from the hub carrier (see figure Hub carrier, hub and rear wheel hub bearing components (drum brake model)).

7. Loosen, but do not remove, the mounting bolts (indicated by the arrows) securing the hub carrier to the suspension strut.

8. Remove the bolt, nut and washers (indicated by the arrows) securing the hub carrier to the suspension control arms, and remove the bolt securing the hub carrier to the suspension trailing arm.
9. Remove the loosened bolts securing the hub carrier to the suspension strut, supporting the carrier so that it does not fall, and remove the hub carrier from the suspension strut.

Installation

PROCEDURE
1. Inspect the hub carrier bushing for cracks, deformation or signs of wear. If it is worn, take the carrier to an automotive workshop for replacement.
2. Install the hub carrier on the suspension strut, aligning the holes for the two mounting bolts. Insert the two mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque (see Subsection 10.1).
3. Install the bolt securing the suspension control arm to the hub carrier, fit the washers and start the nut. Do not fully tighten the nut yet.
4. Install the trailing arm on the hub carrier and finger-tighten the mounting nut and bolt.
5. Place a jack under the hub carrier and raise it to the height it would be at when the vehicle is standing on its wheels.
6. Tighten the nut and bolt securing the suspension control arms to the specified torque (see Subsection 10.1). Remove the jack from under the hub carrier.
7. On models with ABS, install the wheel speed sensor on the hub carrier.
8. Install the rear brake backing plate on the hub carrier, install the hub and tighten the four hub mounting bolts to the specified torque (see Subsection 10.1).
9. Install the brake pipe on the suspension strut bracket and secure it with the clip. Make sure the hose is not twisted.
10. Install the brake drum (see Subsection 9.8) or brake disc (see Subsection 9.7) and caliper (see Subsection 9.6).
11. Install the wheel and wheel nuts.
12. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque (see Subsection 10.1).
