Power Steering Pump

Power steering pump mounting and connections (shown for models with 4A-FE and 7A-FE engines) 1. Vane-type power steering pump
2. Union bolt
3. Gasket
4. High-pressure hose
5. Clamp
6. Return hose
7. Vacuum hoses
8. Adjusting bracket
9. Drive belt
Removal
PROCEDURE
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
* If your vehicle's stereo has an anti-theft code system, make sure you know the radio activation code before disconnecting the battery.
2. Using a large syringe, draw out as much hydraulic fluid as possible from the pump reservoir. Place a drain pan under the vehicle to catch the hydraulic fluid that will spill when the hydraulic hoses are disconnected.
4E-FE Engines
3. Release the clamp and disconnect the return hose from the pump.
4. Loosen the union nut of the high-pressure hose and disconnect the hose from the pump.
5. Disconnect the two vacuum hoses from the pump.
6. Remove the pivot bolt (upper) and adjusting bolt (lower) and remove the drive belt (see subsection 2.6.4). Remove the pivot and adjusting bolts, then remove the pump from the vehicle.
4A-FE and 7A-FE Engines

7. Release the clamp (indicated by left arrow) and disconnect the return hose from the power steering pump. Remove the banjo bolt (indicated by right arrow) of the hydraulic line connection and disconnect the high-pressure hose from the pump.
8. Remove and discard the copper sealing washers. Replace them with new washers when installing the pump.
9. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands.

10. Under the vehicle, disconnect the two vacuum hoses (indicated by arrows) from the power steering pump.
11. Remove the pivot bolt (lower) and adjusting bolt (upper) and remove the drive belt (see subsection 2.6.4).

12. Remove the pivot bolt, adjusting bolt (indicated by left arrow) and two bolts on the right (indicated by arrows), then remove the pump from the vehicle.
Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the banjo bolt of the high-pressure line connection to the specified torque (see Threaded Connection Torque Specifications table). Adjust the drive belt tension following the instructions in (see Subsection 2.6.4).
2. Fill the pump reservoir with power steering fluid to the required level (see Subsection 2.5) and bleed the power steering system (see Subsection 10.20).
