Hub and Bearing (Rear Wheel)

Knuckle Bracket, Hub and Bearing Components,
Rear Wheel Hub (drum brake model)
1. Wheel speed sensor (ABS)
2. Rear wheel knuckle bracket
3. O-ring
4. Rear wheel hub
5. Brake drum
6. Hub bolt
7. Models without ABS
8. Bearing
9. Rear wheel hub
10. Rear brake backing plate
11. Brake hose
12. Clip
* Dust produced by brake pad wear contains asbestos, which is hazardous to health. Do not use gasoline-based solvents to clean the brake assembly. Use only a special brake cleaner.
* Due to the need for special equipment and tools to replace the bearing, it is not recommended to disassemble the hub and bearing yourself. You may remove the hub with the bearing yourself and take them to a workshop for bearing replacement.
Removal
PROCEDURE
1. Loosen the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and support it on stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum from the hub (on models with rear drum brakes) (see subsection 9.8), or remove the brake disc (see subsection 9.7) and the brake caliper (on models with rear disc brakes) (see subsection 9.6).

3. Unscrew the four hub-to-hub carrier bolts, which are accessible through the large hole in the hub, by rotating the hub flange (turn the flange and align the large hole in the flange with each of the bolts in turn).
4. Remove the hub together with the bearing by pulling them out through the brake mechanism.
5. On models without an anti-lock braking system (ABS), the rear wheel hub can be removed from the bearing for replacement. Because special tools are required for this operation, the hub and bearing should be taken to an automotive workshop to press the old bearing out of the hub and install a new one (you may reuse the old hub as long as it is in good condition). Make sure the hub retaining nut is tightened to the specified torque (see Subsection 10.1). On models with ABS, the hub and bearing must be replaced together.
Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Loosen the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and support it on stands. Remove the wheel.

2. Lubricate the new O-ring with oil and install it on the outer circumference of the raised lip on the rear brake backing plate.
3. Do not push the O-ring down the lip to the backing plate itself – when installing the hub and bearing, the O-ring will seat in its groove on the inner surface of the hub center bore as the mounting bolts are tightened.
4. Install the hub and bearing on the hub carrier and align the holes in the hub with the holes in the rear brake backing plate. Insert the bolts. A magnet may be used to position the bolts in the holes. After all four bolts are installed, tighten them to the specified torque given in the Specifications section at the beginning of this chapter.
5. Install the brake drum or brake disc and caliper, then install the wheel. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel nuts to the torque specified in the Specifications section of the relevant chapter.
