Power Steering System

~1min read

Bleeding

PROCEDURE
1. If the power steering hydraulic hoses were disconnected during any work, the system must be bled to remove all air and restore the required power steering assist.
2. With the wheels positioned straight ahead, check the power steering fluid level in the pump reservoir and, if necessary, add the recommended type of fluid (see Subsection 2.1) until the level reaches the Cold mark on the dipstick.
3. Start the engine and let it idle at increased speed. Check the fluid level again and add fluid if necessary so that the level is at the Cold mark on the dipstick.
4. Bleed the power steering system by turning the wheels several times from side to side. Do not turn the wheels fully to the stop. This removes air from the hydraulic system. While bleeding, keep the fluid reservoir on the pump full.
5. After air has been removed from the system, position the wheels straight ahead and let the engine run for several more minutes before switching it off.
6. Drive the vehicle and check steering operation and absence of extraneous noise when turning the steering wheel.
7. Check the fluid level. It should be at the Hot mark on the dipstick when the engine is at normal operating temperature. Add fluid if necessary (see Subsection 2.5).
