The cruise control system (if equipped) maintains a constant vehicle speed using an electronic control unit (computer) located in the passenger compartment and an actuator located near the battery in the engine compartment. The actuator is connected to the throttle linkage by a cable or rod. In addition to the actuator, the system includes a brake switch, clutch switch, control switches, relays, or connecting wires.
Checking some functions of this system requires special equipment and special diagnostic procedures that are not available to the average vehicle owner.
The following describes general procedures for checking the cruise control system that may help locate the source of a malfunction.

Inspection

PROCEDURE
1. Check the fuse (refer to Subsection 12.1).
2. Ask an assistant to depress the brake pedal while you check their operation and the system. Activating the stop lamp switch and, if equipped, the clutch pedal switch, deactivates the cruise control system.
3. If the stop lamps do not come on or do not go off, repair the fault and recheck the cruise control system. Check the clutch pedal switch (refer to Subsection 8.2.6).
4. Inspect the vacuum hose (if equipped) connected to the servo, and check the linkage between the cruise control servo and the throttle valve, and replace if necessary.
5. Cruise control systems use a number of different devices to determine vehicle speed. On these models, the speed sensor is located in the transmission. Remove the bolt and remove the sensor (refer to Subsection 7.2.3), rotate its gear and check the sensor signals with a digital voltmeter while turning it. If the resistance does not change as the sensor rotates, the sensor is faulty.
6. Drive the vehicle to check the cruise control system. If it does not operate, consult a qualified technician for further diagnosis and repair.
