Starting and driving

Remote Start (ERS)*

~2min read

Engine Remote Start (ERS) on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) allows the interior to be pre-heated or pre-cooled comfortably. This section describes the requirements and safety aspects to observe when using remote start. It also points out the maximum run time and the effects on the battery. Recommendations on complying with legal requirements promote responsible use.

Remote Start (ERS - Engine Remote Start) lets you start the vehicle engine remotely to heat or cool the interior before driving.

ERS is activated using the key and/or via Volvo On Call*.

The climate control starts with the same setting that was selected when the vehicle was switched off.

A remotely started engine runs for a maximum of 15 minutes and then switches off automatically. After 2 consecutive ERS activations, the engine must be started in the normal way before remote start is available again.

ERS is only available for vehicles with automatic transmission and hood switch4.

CAUTION

The service life of the transponder key battery is affected by the ERS function. If ERS is used frequently, the battery must be replaced once a year. See Transponder key - Battery replacement

CAUTION

Observe local and national regulations and requirements for idling. Also observe local and national regulations and requirements for noise levels while the engine is running.

WARNING

The following conditions must be met to remotely start the engine:

  • The vehicle must remain under supervision.
  • No persons or animals may be in or near the vehicle.
  • The vehicle must not be parked in a closed, unventilated area. Exhaust gases can cause serious injury to people and animals.

Remote Start (ERS) on the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) allows the engine to be started remotely to pre-heat or pre-cool the interior. The function provides comfort but requires responsible use, particularly with regard to exhaust emissions and local regulations.

After two consecutive ERS activations, the engine must be started manually. Volvo places great emphasis on comfort and responsibility going hand in hand.
