When operating the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) with diesel fuel, special quality requirements must be observed. This section explains the recommended standards, handling at low temperatures and precautions when refueling. It also provides tips on preventing condensation and maintaining the fuel system. Notes on starting after the tank has run dry and on water separation in the filter support operational safety.

Diesel is used as fuel for the engine.

Only refuel with branded diesel fuel.

Never use fuel of unknown quality. Diesel fuel should meet the standard EN 590 and/or SS 155435. Diesel engines are sensitive to contaminants in the fuel, such as metal particles or excessive sulfur content.

At low temperatures (-6 °C to -40 °C), diesel fuel may separate paraffin.

This can lead to starting problems.

Larger oil companies also offer special diesel fuel for temperatures around freezing point. It flows more easily at low temperatures and reduces the risk of wax formation in the fuel system.

If the tank is kept well filled, the risk of condensation forming in it is reduced. When refueling, make sure the area around the filler pipe is clean. Avoid fuel splashes on the paintwork and, if necessary, remove them with water and soap.

IMPORTANT

For diesel fuel the following applies:

  • It must meet the standards EN 590 and/or SS 155435.
  • Its sulfur content must not exceed 10 mg/kg.
  • It may contain no more than 7 vol-% FAME (fatty acid methyl ester).
IMPORTANT

Diesel-like fuels that must not be used:

  • Special additives
  • Marine diesel fuel
  • Heating oil
  • FAME (fatty acid methyl ester) and vegetable oil.

These fuels do not meet the requirements of Volvo's recommendations and contribute to increased wear and engine damage that is not covered by Volvo warranties.

Tank run dry

Due to the design of a diesel engine's fuel system, if the fuel runs out, bleeding may be required at a workshop before restarting after refueling.

After the tank has run dry, the fuel system must first perform a check. This may take some time. Therefore, before starting the engine after refueling the tank with diesel, proceed as follows:

  1. Insert the transponder key into the ignition lock and press it to the end position. For more information see Key positions.
  2. Press the START button without depressing the brake and/or clutch pedal.
  3. Wait approximately one minute.
  4. To start the engine: depress the brake and/or clutch pedal and press the START button again.
CAUTION

Before refueling if the fuel is low:

  • Park the vehicle on as level/horizontal ground as possible. If the vehicle is inclined, air pockets may form in the fuel supply.

16 Diesel fuel may contain a certain amount of FAME, but no more may be added.

Drain condensation water from the fuel filter

Condensation water that separates out of the fuel in the fuel filter can otherwise cause engine malfunctions.

The fuel filter must be drained at the intervals specified in the Service and Warranty Book, and whenever contaminated fuel is suspected to have been used. For more information see Volvo Service Program.

IMPORTANT

Some special additives prevent water separation in the fuel filter.

For diesel engines, Volvo recommends high-quality fuel to EN 590 for the S80 (2nd gen) to avoid damage and starting problems. Especially in cold temperatures, use winter-grade diesel. Regularly draining condensation water from the filter further protects the fuel system.

If the tank has run dry, bleeding may be necessary to restart the engine. Following the instructions in this manual is essential for a smooth procedure.

FAQ

Why is winter-grade diesel important?
It prevents paraffin separation, which can cause starting problems and damage to the fuel system.

What to do after running out of fuel?
Carry out the starting procedure as described in the manual and, if necessary, have the fuel system bled at a workshop.
