Fuel - gasoline

~2min read

For the gasoline engines of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016), clear recommendations are given on fuel quality and composition. This section describes the ideal octane rating and explains why unleaded fuel is mandatory. It also explains how to handle ethanol content and additives. Guidance on protecting the catalytic converter and complying with standards supports safe operation.

Gasoline is used as fuel for the engine.

Only refuel with gasoline from well-known manufacturers. Always avoid fuel of unknown quality. If available, the gasoline should meet standard EN 228.

  • 95 RON is suitable for normal vehicle use.
  • For maximum performance and economy, 98 RON is recommended.

For the best possible performance and optimal fuel consumption, use the highest available octane rating when driving at outside temperatures above +38 °C.

IMPORTANT
  • Use only unleaded fuel to avoid damaging the catalytic converter.
  • Fuel containing metallic additives must not be used.
  • Do not use additives that are not recommended by Volvo.

Alcohols/ethanol

IMPORTANT
  • Fuel containing up to 10 % by volume ethanol is permitted.
  • E10 petrol to EN 228 (max. 10 % by volume ethanol) is permitted.
  • A higher ethanol content than E10 (max. 10 % by volume ethanol), e.g. E85, is not permitted.

On the Volvo S80 (2nd gen), fuel selection is decisive for performance and longevity. Unleaded petrol to EN 228 is recommended, ideally 95 RON for normal use or 98 RON for maximum performance. E10 petrol is permitted, but higher ethanol contents such as E85 are not.

Additives or fuels containing metallic components should not be used, as they cause damage and jeopardize the warranty. Volvo places great emphasis on quality and recommends branded fuels for optimum results.

This helps ensure the reliability and efficiency of the engine over many years.
