The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) provides better control during emergency braking. This section describes the function, its benefits for steering control, and the typical brake pedal feedback. It also explains the emergency stop signal, hazard warning lights, and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Notes on safe use help build confidence in the brake assist systems.

Service brake - Braking with anti-lock braking system

Anti-lock brakes, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), prevent the wheels from locking during braking.

This function helps maintain steering control, which makes it easier to steer around obstacles, for example. During activation, vibrations may be felt in the brake pedal. This is completely normal.

After the engine is started, an automatic short test of the ABS system is performed when the driver releases the brake pedal. A further automatic ABS test may be performed when the vehicle reaches a speed of 10 km/h. The test can be felt as pulses in the brake pedal.

Service brake - Emergency brake lights and automatic hazard warning flashers

The emergency brake lights are activated to alert traffic behind the vehicle to a hard braking maneuver. With this function, the brake lights flash instead of staying on continuously as during normal braking.

The emergency brake lights come on when hard braking occurs at speeds above 50 km/h. When the vehicle has slowed to below 10 km/h, the brake lights stop flashing and remain on continuously.

At the same time, the hazard warning lights are switched on. They flash until the driver accelerates the vehicle again or switches off the hazard warning lights.

Service brake - Emergency Brake Assist

Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) helps increase braking force, thereby shortening the braking distance.

EBA detects the driver's braking behavior and increases braking force when necessary. The braking force can be boosted until the ABS system intervenes. The EBA function is interrupted as soon as the pressure on the brake pedal is reduced.

CAUTION

When EBA is activated, the brake pedal sinks slightly lower than usual. Press and hold the brake pedal for as long as necessary. When the brake pedal is released, braking stops completely.

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) of the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) helps maintain steering control even during hard braking. Vibrations in the brake pedal during ABS activation are normal and indicate that the system is working. Emergency brake lights and hazard warning lights further enhance safety during hard braking.

Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) helps automatically increase braking force in critical situations. The interaction of these systems shortens braking distances and improves control during emergency maneuvers.

With this, Volvo underlines its commitment to the highest safety standards.
