When towing a trailer, the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) offers numerous functions and safety tips. This section explains the requirements for the trailer hitch, loading and driving technique, and special notes for manual and automatic transmissions. It also provides tips on using level control, maintaining the trailer hitch, and handling the trailer safely. Warnings about weights and speeds help promote safety.

Towing a trailer*

When towing a trailer, several important points must be observed, for example regarding the trailer hitch, the trailer itself and the load distribution within the trailer.

The total permissible load depends on the vehicle's curb weight. The total load capacity of the vehicle is reduced by the combined weight of the occupants and all special equipment, for example a trailer hitch. For more detailed information, see Weights.

If the trailer hitch is fitted by Volvo, the vehicle is supplied with the equipment required for towing a trailer.

  • The trailer hitch of the vehicle must be approved.
  • When retrofitting a trailer hitch, ask your Volvo Partner whether your vehicle is fully equipped for towing a trailer.
  • Distribute the load on the trailer so that the weight on the trailer hitch does not exceed the maximum permissible nose weight.
  • Increase the tire pressure according to the maximum load. For more information on tire pressures, see Tires - approved tire pressure.
  • When towing a trailer, the engine is subjected to greater stress than normal.
  • Do not tow a heavy trailer when the vehicle is still very new. Wait until the vehicle has covered at least 1000 km.
  • On long, steep downhill grades, the brakes are subjected to considerably greater stress than normal. Shift to a lower gear and adapt your speed accordingly.
  • For safety reasons, do not exceed the maximum permissible speed for vehicles towing a trailer. Observe applicable regulations for permissible speeds and weights.
  • When towing a trailer on long, steep uphill grades, drive at low speed.
  • Avoid towing a trailer on gradients exceeding 12%.

Trailer cable

If the vehicle's trailer hitch has a 13-pin connector and the trailer has a 7-pin connector, an adapter is required. Use an adapter cable approved by Volvo. The cable must never drag on the ground.

Trailer turn signal and brake lights

If one of the trailer turn signal lights is faulty, the turn signal symbol in the instrument cluster flashes faster than normal and the message Trailer turn signal fault appears in the information display.

If one of the trailer brake lights is faulty, the message Trailer brake light fault appears.

Level control*

The rear shock absorbers always maintain a constant height regardless of the vehicle load (up to the permissible gross weight). When the vehicle is stationary, the rear sinks slightly, which is completely normal.

Trailer weights

For information on the trailer weights permitted by Volvo, see Towing capacity and nose weight.

CAUTION

The maximum trailer weights listed are those approved by Volvo.

However, national vehicle regulations may impose additional limits on trailer weights and speeds.

Trailer hitches may be certified for higher or lower weights than the vehicle is permitted to tow.

WARNING

The recommended trailer weights must be observed. Otherwise, the entire combination may be difficult to control during evasive maneuvers and braking.

Towing a trailer* - manual transmission

When towing a trailer on mountain roads in warm weather, there is a risk of overheating.

Overheating

When towing a trailer on mountain roads in warm weather, there is a risk of overheating.

  • Do not exceed 4500 rpm (diesel engine: 3500 rpm), otherwise the oil temperature may rise too high.

Diesel engine 5-cyl.

  • When there is a risk of overheating, the optimal engine speed is 2300–3000 rpm for optimal coolant circulation.

Towing a trailer* - automatic transmission

When towing a trailer on mountain roads in warm weather, there is a risk of overheating.

  • An automatic transmission always selects the optimal gear in relation to load and engine speed.
  • If the engine overheats, a warning symbol lights up in the instrument cluster together with a message in the information display. If necessary, follow the recommendation displayed.

Steep gradients

  • Do not lock the automatic transmission in a higher gear than the engine can handle. Driving in higher gears at low engine speed is not always advantageous.

Parking on a Slope

  1. Press the foot brake.
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Move the selector lever to position P.
  4. Release the foot brake.
  • The selector lever must be in park position P when parking a vehicle with an automatic transmission and a trailer attached. Always apply the parking brake.
  • Use wheel chocks to block the wheels when parking a vehicle with a trailer attached on a slope.
IMPORTANT

Starting on a slope

  1. Press the foot brake.
  2. Move the selector lever to drive position D.
  3. Release the parking brake.
  4. Release the foot brake and drive off.

Towing device/towing bracket*

A towing bracket can be used, for example, to tow a trailer.

If the vehicle is equipped with a detachable towing bracket, carefully follow the installation instructions for the removable part, see Detachable towing bracket* - Fitting/removing.

WARNING

If the vehicle is equipped with a detachable Volvo towing bracket:

  • Follow the installation instructions carefully.
  • The detachable part must be locked with the key before driving.
  • Check that the indicator window is green.

Must be checked

  • The ball head must be cleaned regularly and greased.
CAUTION

If a towing ball coupling with vibration damper is used, the towing ball must not be greased.

The Volvo S80 (2nd gen) provides comprehensive guidance for towing a trailer. Correct load distribution, the correct tyre pressure and compliance with the permitted trailer weights are essential for safety and stability. On new vehicles, towing a heavy trailer should only take place after a break-in distance of 1000 km.

Especially on steep downhill grades, driving in a lower gear is advisable to relieve the brakes. The recommended speed must not be exceeded for safety reasons. Volvo places great importance on safe and comfortable trips with a trailer.

FAQ

What to do if there is a risk of overheating when towing?
Reduce speed, shift to a lower gear and watch for warning messages in the display.

Why use level control?
It keeps the vehicle height constant and improves handling when loaded.
