Using the towing eye on the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) is an important part of roadside assistance. This section explains how to fit the towing eye, how to use it safely when driving onto a tow truck, and how to remove it after use. It also points out the limits of the towing eye for recovery and the need for professional help. Tips on avoiding damage during recovery help protect the vehicle.

Towing eye

The towing eye is screwed into a threaded recess behind a cover on the right-hand side of the front or rear bumper.

Fitting the towing eye

Befestigung der Abschleppöse
  1. Remove the towing eye, which is located under the floor cover in the luggage compartment.
  2. The cover for the towing eye attachment point comes in two versions, each of which must be opened in a different way:
On the version with a recess, insert a coin or similar object into the recess and bend the cover outward. Then fold the cover fully out and remove it. The other version has a marking along one side or in one corner: press the marking with one finger while using a coin or similar object to fold out the opposite side or corner. The cover pivots about its centre line and can then be removed. Screw the towing eye in as far as its flange. Tighten the eye securely, for example with the wheel nut wrench. After use, unscrew the towing eye and store it in its designated place. Finally, refit the cover to the bumper.

The towing eye can be used to pull the vehicle up onto the bed of a tow truck. Whether this is possible depends on the position and ground clearance of the vehicle. If the tow truck ramp is too steep or the vehicle has insufficient ground clearance, the vehicle may be damaged when it is pulled up by the towing eye. If necessary, lift the vehicle using the tow truck's lifting equipment.

WARNING

No persons or objects may be behind the recovery vehicle while the vehicle being towed is being pulled onto the bed.

IMPORTANT

The towing eye is intended exclusively for towing on roads. It must not be used to pull a vehicle out of a ditch or to recover a stuck vehicle. Request professional help for recovering a vehicle.
