Gear indicator*
The gear indicator in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) helps the driver drive economically and in an environmentally friendly way. This section explains how the Gear Shift Indicator works and the meaning of the displays. It also covers the differences between manual and automatic transmissions. Tips for optimal use support efficient driving.
The gear indicator tells the driver when it is time to shift up or down.
For environmentally friendly driving, it is important to drive in the correct gear and shift at the right time.
To assist the driver, certain variants have an indicator called GSI (Gear Shift Indicator), which shows when it is advisable to shift to the next higher or lower gear in order to achieve the lowest possible fuel consumption.
However, when considering factors such as performance and smooth, vibration-free running, it may be appropriate to shift at a higher engine speed. The boxed number is the current gear.
Manual transmission

Only one marker lights up at a time. During normal driving, only the center marker lights up.
When shifting up is recommended, the "+" marker lights up. When shifting down is recommended, the "-" marker lights up (highlighted in red in the illustration).
Automatic transmission
