Diesel particulate filter (DPF). Catalytic converters. Economical driving

~5min read

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) ensures efficient exhaust gas cleaning. This section describes automatic regeneration, the need for regular trips to clean the filter, and the warning messages in the display. The design and function of the catalytic converter and the lambda sensor are also explained. Recommendations for economical driving complete the information.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Diesel vehicles are equipped with a particulate filter, which allows more effective exhaust gas cleaning.

Particles in the exhaust gases are collected in the filter during normal driving. To burn off the particles and empty the filter, a so-called regeneration is started. For this, the engine must have reached its normal operating temperature.

Regeneration of the particulate filter takes place automatically and normally lasts 10–20 minutes. At a low average speed it may take somewhat longer.

During regeneration, fuel consumption increases slightly.

Regeneration in cold weather

If the vehicle is frequently driven over short distances in cold weather, the engine does not reach its normal operating temperature. As a result, the diesel particulate filter does not regenerate and the filter is not emptied.

As soon as the filter is approximately 80% full of particles, the yellow warning triangle lights up in the instrument cluster and the message Soot filter full. See manual. appears in the information display.

To start regeneration of the filter, drive the vehicle, preferably on a country road or on the motorway, until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. The vehicle should then be driven for a further 20 minutes.

CAUTION

The following may occur during regeneration:

  • A slight temporary reduction in engine output may be noticed.
  • Fuel consumption may temporarily increase.
  • A burning smell may occur.

After regeneration is complete, the warning message is cleared automatically.

In cold weather, use the auxiliary heater*, as this allows the engine to reach normal operating temperature more quickly.

IMPORTANT

If the filter is completely full of particles, the engine is difficult to start and the filter becomes non-functional.

In this case, the filter may need to be replaced.

Catalytic converters

The task of the catalytic converters is to clean the exhaust gases. The catalytic converters are located close to the engine so that they reach their operating temperature quickly.

The catalytic converters consist of a monolith (ceramic or metal) with channels.

The channel walls are coated with a layer of platinum, rhodium and palladium.

These metals have a catalytic effect, i.e. they speed up the chemical reaction without being consumed themselves.

Lambda sensor™ oxygen sensor

The lambda sensor is part of a control system that reduces emissions and improves economy. For more information, see Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

A lambda sensor (oxygen sensor) monitors the oxygen content of the exhaust gases leaving the engine. The measured value from the exhaust gas analysis is processed in an electronic system, which continuously controls the fuel injectors. The ratio of the fuel-air mixture supplied to the engine is constantly regulated. This control creates optimum conditions for efficient combustion and, together with the three-way catalytic converter, reduces harmful emissions (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides).

Economical driving

You drive most economically by driving ahead-of-the-situation and cautiously, and by adapting your driving style and speed to the prevailing traffic conditions.

  • For the lowest fuel consumption, activate ECO*17.
  • The ECO guide shows you how economically the vehicle is being driven, see Eco guide & Power guide*.
  • Drive in the highest possible gear and adapt your driving style to the traffic situation and the road. Low engine speeds lead to lower fuel consumption. Use the gear shift indicator.
  • Avoid unnecessary acceleration and hard braking.
  • Fast driving uses more fuel: the higher the speed, the higher the air resistance.
  • Do not warm up the engine at idle; instead, drive off as soon as possible under light load. A cold engine uses more fuel than a warm one.
  • Drive with the correct tyre pressure and check it regularly. For best results, use the ECO tyre pressure, see Tyres - approved tyre pressure.
  • Fuel consumption may vary depending on the tyres fitted. Consult your Volvo retailer for advice.
  • Remove unnecessary items from the vehicle: the more load, the higher the energy consumption.
  • When braking, use engine braking if this can be done without endangering other road users.
  • Roof load and roof box increase air resistance and energy consumption. Remove the roof rack when it is not needed.
  • Avoid driving with the windows open.

WARNING

Never switch off the engine while the vehicle is moving, e.g. on a downhill grade, as this deactivates important systems such as power steering and brake booster.

17 Applies only to vehicles with automatic transmission.

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the Volvo S80 (2nd gen) ensures effective exhaust gas cleaning. It regenerates automatically while driving, burning off particles. A longer drive with the engine at operating temperature supports this process and prevents the filter from clogging.

The catalytic converters and the lambda sensor also help reduce emissions. Economical driving, with anticipatory driving and an adapted speed, helps save fuel and protect the environment.

Volvo applies a comprehensive approach combining technology and responsibility, which supports both the environment and the driver.
