Citroen C5 Aircross (2017- 2024) - Owner's Manual

Checking fluid levels

~5min read

Check all these levels regularly in accordance with the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. Top up if necessary, unless otherwise specified.

If a level drops significantly, have the corresponding system checked by the CITROËN network or a qualified workshop.

Fluids must comply with the manufacturer's recommendations and with the engine specification of the vehicle.

When working under the bonnet, take care as some engine areas may be extremely hot (risk of burns), and the cooling fan may start at any time (even with the ignition off).

Used products

Avoid prolonged skin contact with oil and used fluids.

Most of these fluids are harmful to health and some are highly corrosive.

Do not pour used oil and fluids down drains or onto the ground.

Drain used oil into the containers provided for this purpose at the CITROËN network or at a qualified workshop.

Engine oil

Check the level on level ground, with the engine stopped for 30 minutes, either using the oil level indicator in the instrument cluster with the ignition on (for vehicles fitted with an electronic dipstick), or using the dipstick.

It is normal to top up the oil between services (or oil changes). A check, with top-up if necessary, is recommended every 5,000 km.

To preserve engine reliability and emissions control systems, never use an additive in the engine oil.

Checking with the dipstick

For the location of the dipstick, refer to the illustration of the engine compartment for your vehicle.

► Grasp the dipstick by its coloured handle and pull it out completely.

► Wipe the dipstick blade with a clean, lint-free cloth.

Informations pratiques

► Reinsert the dipstick fully, then pull it out again to check visually: the correct level must be between the A (max) and B (min) marks.

Do not start the engine if the level is:

- above the A mark: contact the CITROËN network or a qualified workshop.

- below the B mark: you must top up the engine oil.

Oil specifications

Before topping up or changing the engine oil, check that the oil matches the engine and complies with the recommendations in the maintenance schedule supplied with the vehicle (or available from the CITROËN network or a qualified workshop).

Using an oil that is not recommended may void the contractual warranty in the event of engine failure.

Topping up the engine oil

For the location of the engine oil filler opening, refer to the illustration of the engine compartment for your vehicle.

► Pour the oil in small quantities, avoiding splashes on engine components (fire risk).

► Wait a few minutes before checking the level with the dipstick.

► Top up the level if necessary.

► After checking the level, tighten the filler cap securely and return the dipstick to its housing.

For 30 minutes after topping up the oil, the oil level shown in the instrument cluster when the ignition is switched on is not valid.

Brake fluid

The level of this fluid must be close to the “MAX” mark. If not, check the wear of the brake pads.

For the brake system fluid change interval, refer to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

Clean the cap before removing it to top up. Use only DOT4 brake fluid from a sealed container.

Coolant

Topping up this fluid between services is normal.

Check and top up with the engine cold.

A low level risks serious damage to the engine. The level must be close to the “MAX” mark, never above it.

If the level is close to or below the “MIN” mark, topping up is essential.

When the engine is hot, the coolant temperature is regulated by the cooling fan.

The cooling system is under pressure, so wait at least one hour after the engine has stopped before carrying out any work.

In an urgent situation, to avoid the risk of burns, use a cloth and turn the cap two turns to release the pressure.

Once the pressure has released, remove the cap and top up the level.

Engine cooling after switching off: the cooling fan may start after the engine has been switched off.

Take care that objects or clothing do not get caught in the fan blade!

Windscreen washer fluid

Top up the level whenever necessary.

Fluid specifications

Top up using a ready-to-use mixture.

In winter (sub-zero temperatures), use a fluid with antifreeze suited to the temperature conditions to protect the system components (pump, reservoir, pipes, nozzles).

In all cases, filling with pure water is prohibited (risk of freezing and limescale deposits).

Diesel particulate filter additive (diesel with particulate filter)

The minimum level of the particulate filter additive tank is indicated by this warning light staying on, accompanied by an audible signal and a warning message.

Topping up

Top up this additive promptly.

Go to a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.

AdBlue (BlueHDi)

A warning is triggered as soon as the reserve level is reached.

For more information on the indicators, and in particular the AdBlue range indicators, refer to the relevant section.

To avoid the vehicle being legally immobilised, you must refill the AdBlue tank.

For more information on AdBlue (BlueHDi), and in particular on obtaining AdBlue, refer to the relevant section.
