Dynamic stability control
The chapter on dynamic stability control in the Citroën C6 (1st generation) describes the ESP and ASR systems in detail. They stabilise the vehicle when there is a risk of skidding by specifically regulating engine power and braking force. The safety package is supplemented by ABS, brake assist and an electronic parking brake. Warning lights come on in the event of a malfunction, and the system can be deactivated, for example when using snow chains. These technologies increase driving stability, prevent skidding and ensure controlled braking behaviour in extreme situations.
DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESP) AND TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
Both systems supplement the ABS. If the actual direction of travel of the vehicle deviates from the direction desired by the driver, the ESP system automatically influences the brake of one or more wheels as well as the engine to bring the vehicle back onto the desired course. The ASR system improves traction to prevent the wheels from spinning. To do this, ASR influences the brakes of the driven wheels and the engine. In addition, it improves the directional stability of the vehicle during acceleration.
FUNCTION
When the ESP or ASR system is active, the "ESP/ASR" warning light flashes.
Deactivation
In exceptional cases (difficulty starting the vehicle, stuck in snow, using snow chains, on slippery ground, etc.) it may be useful to deactivate the ESP/ASR systems and allow the wheels to spin in order to regain grip.
Press button A. The "ESP/ASR" warning light and the indicator light of button A come on. The ESP/ASR systems are no longer active.
The ESP/ASR systems are switched back on:
- Automatically when the ignition is switched off.
- Automatically from a speed of approximately 50 km/h.
- Manually by pressing button A.
Malfunction
If a malfunction of the systems occurs, the "ESP/ASR" warning light comes on.
Contact a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop to have the system checked.

The ESP system increases safety during normal driving, but should not encourage the driver to drive more riskily or at excessive speeds.
The system only works reliably if the manufacturer's regulations regarding the wheels (tyres and rims), the braking system, the electronic components and the fitting and repair procedures are observed by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.
After an impact, have the system checked by a CITROËN dealer.
Brakes
If the electrically operated parking brake is released, this warning light and the STOP warning light coming on, together with a message, indicate that the brake fluid level is too low or that there is a malfunction of the brake force distributor.
Stop immediately. Contact a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop without delay.
Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
The ABS increases driving safety by preventing the wheels from locking during sudden braking or on surfaces with low grip. Loss of steering control is prevented.
The operation of all electrical components required for the ABS is checked by an electronic monitoring system before and after driving. The ABS warning light comes on when the ignition is switched on and must go out after a few seconds.
If the warning light does not go out, this indicates that the ABS has been switched off due to a fault. If the warning light comes on while driving, this also indicates that the ABS system is not active. In both cases the normal braking system remains effective, as on a vehicle without ABS.
However, to restore the safety of a fully functioning ABS, the vehicle must be checked by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop as soon as possible.
On slippery roads (gravel, snow, black ice, etc.) careful driving remains absolutely essential.
Brake Assist
In an emergency, this system achieves the optimum brake pressure as quickly as possible, thereby shortening the braking distance. It is activated depending on the speed at which the brake pedal is pressed, which reduces resistance. To maintain the effect of the brake assist, keep your foot on the brake pedal.
The dynamic stability control of the Citroën C6 (1st generation) ensures safe handling in difficult situations. Together with the ASR system, the Citroën C6 2005-2012 provides additional safety on wet or slippery roads. Both systems intervene selectively to stabilise the direction of travel and prevent wheel spin.
Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, the system reacts instantly and supports the driver without compromising ride comfort. This keeps the Citroën C6 (1st generation) securely in its lane, even in demanding conditions.
These features make the Citroën C6 2005-2012 a saloon that meets the highest demands for safety and driving stability and stands out from the competition.
