Removing and installing steering column switches

~2min read

The switches for turn signals, exterior lighting and wipers are so-called steering column switches.

Removal
  • Disconnect the battery negative (-) cable. Warning: this erases electronic memories, such as engine operating values. Observe the notes in the chapter "Remove and install battery".

  • Remove steering wheel, see page 160.

  • Unscrew the spiral cable unit with 3 screws.

The wheels must be in the straight-ahead position. Caution: in the spiral cable unit, the connecting cables for airbag and horn are coiled in a spiral so that they can follow the movement of the steering wheel. When the steering wheel is removed, the rotating mechanism of the connecting cables is automatically locked to ensure correct function after installation.

Installation
  • Slide the steering column switches onto the steering column and push on the multi-pin connector.

  • Align the steering column switches according to the mark made and screw them in place.

  • Connect the spiral cable unit connector, and screw the spiral cable unit in place. The wheels must be in the straight-ahead position. Caution: when the steering wheel is installed, the locking of the spiral cable unit is automatically released.

Caution: if for any reason the position of the upper disc relative to the lower disc of the spiral cable unit has shifted, the unit must be replaced. When replacing, the spiral cable unit is supplied together with the steering column switches. Be sure that the wheels are in the straight-ahead position during installation.

The device is locked by a plastic key, which must be removed when installing the steering wheel.
  • Screw on the upper, then the lower steering column trim.

  • Install steering wheel, see page 160.

  • Connect the battery negative cable (-).

  • Check all functions of the steering column levers.

  • Set the clock.

  • If required, enter the radio anti-theft code.
