Removal and Installation of PCM/ECM
The vehicles covered in this Manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Before performing any work near the airbag module, steering column, or instrument panel, disable the SRS to avoid injury from accidental deployment (refer to Section Body Electrical System). SRS wiring can be easily identified by its yellow insulation.
To prevent damage to the PCM from electrostatic discharge, avoid touching the module connector terminals. Ground yourself whenever possible. The PCM is part of the anti-theft system and provides engine immobilization. After replacing the PCM, the new module must be programmed at a qualified service facility before starting the engine. Replacement of the PCM should also be performed by a qualified technician.
PROCEDURE
1. The PCM is located inside the vehicle, under the instrument panel, near the center console assembly.
2. Disable the SRS (refer to Section Body Electrical System).
If the installed audio system has a security code, make sure you have the correct code to reactivate the unit before disconnecting the battery!
3. Remove the carpet from the lower part of the center console in the driver and passenger footwells (refer to Section Body). Unobstructed access to the PCM assembly should be available.

4. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors.
To prevent damage to the processor, the ignition must be off (key in OFF position) when connecting or disconnecting the wiring.

5. Remove the bolts securing the PCM mounting bracket.
6. Carefully remove the PCM.
To prevent damage to the PCM from static electricity, avoid touching the module connector terminals. Ground yourself whenever possible. Store the module in anti-static packaging (available at automotive accessory stores).
7. Install in the reverse order of removal.
When replacing the module, the engine immobilizer code must be entered into the new module at a qualified service facility.
