Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Inspection and Replacement

~2min read

The VSS is mounted on the transmission case and is a variable reluctance sensor that begins generating voltage pulses once vehicle speed exceeds 4.8 km/h. The pulses from the sensor are sent to the PCM and are used by the module to control fuel injector pulse width and transmission shifting. On models with a manual transmission, one VSS is used. On models equipped with an automatic transmission, two speed sensors are provided: one is connected to the transmission output shaft and the other to the intermediate shaft. Failure of either one results in shifting problems.
INSPECTION
PROCEDURE

Manual Transmission Models
1. Disconnect the sensor harness connector. Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage at the connector (harness side). Connect the positive voltmeter probe to the black/yellow wire terminal and the negative probe to ground. Battery voltage should be present at the connector. If there is no voltage, check the VSS wiring between the sensor and the fuse/relay junction block (left side under the instrument panel). Also check the fuse itself. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between the black wire terminal of the connector and ground. If there is no continuity, check the black wire and the quality of its terminal connections.
2. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on safety stands. Chock the rear wheels and place the transmission in neutral. Connect the wiring to the VSS, turn the ignition on (do not start the engine), and check the signal (blue/white) wire terminal on the back of the connector with a voltmeter (connect the negative probe to body ground). While holding one of the front wheels stationary, turn the opposite wheel by hand. The voltage should fluctuate between 0 and 5 V. If it does not, replace the VSS.

Automatic Transmission Models
3. Disconnect the wiring from the applicable speed sensor. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the two sensor terminals. The nominal value is approximately 400 ÷ 600 Ω. If it is not within this range, replace the sensor.

ЗАМЕНА

REPLACEMENT
PROCEDURE

1. Disconnect the wiring from the vehicle speed sensor.
2. Remove the mounting bolt and remove the sensor from the transmission case.
3. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to replace the O-ring.
