Actuators
PGM-FI main relay (fuel pump relay): The PCM activates the fuel pump relay when the ignition key is turned to the START or RUN position. When the ignition is switched on, relay activation builds fuel pressure in the fuel system. For more information on the main relay, refer to the Fuel and Exhaust Systems section.
Fuel injectors: The PCM controls each injector individually according to the firing order. The module also controls injector opening duration, determined by the control pulse width measured in milliseconds, which sets the amount of fuel injected into each cylinder. For more information on the fuel injection system operating principle, injector replacement and servicing, refer to the Fuel and Exhaust Systems section.
Ignition control module (ICM): The module controls ignition coil operation and determines the required base ignition timing based on commands from the PCM. All vehicle models covered in this Manual use an ICM integrated into the distributor. For details, refer to the Engine Electrical section.
Idle Air Control (IAC) valve: The IAC valve meters the amount of air bypassing the throttle plate when the throttle is closed or at idle. The PCM controls valve opening and the resulting airflow.
EVAP canister purge valve: This valve is part of the Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) system. When commanded by the PCM, it releases stored fuel vapors from the canister into the intake manifold so they are burned during normal engine operation.
EVAP canister purge solenoid: The PCM uses this solenoid when the OBD-II system checks EVAP system operation.
